The creators of the award-winning high fantasy series "Game of Thrones", Davide Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have been entrusted with developing a new series of films for another giant franchise, Star Wars.

Writer and producer team David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will move from the Seven Kingdoms to a galaxy far, far away.

Details of the projects Benioff and Weiss are working on are not available yet.

In a statement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy praised Benioff and Weiss, calling the two of the best storytellers today.

Disney boss Bob Iger has now revealed that the studio is in fact developing more than one Star Wars show.

Rian Johnson has recently commented on a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi movie and whether he would be interested in directing the film himself.

Lucasfilm did not say how many movies would comprise the new series or announce release dates. However, fans can rest assured that there will be no shortage of "Star Wars" films and series in the coming years. They plan to get started on Star Wars when the final season of HBO's "Game of Thrones" is complete.

The final season is due to be broadcast in 2019, bringing to a close the saga of the warring families in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and their multi-generational struggle for control of the Iron Throne.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016), the first of three scheduled spin-off movies, also made more than $1 billion, raising hopes for the success of the next, "Solo: A Star Wars Story", which opens in May.
