SA president Jacob Zuma could quit within days

South African President Jacob Zuma

News that the recently elected leader of the ruling party had begun face-to-face talks with Mr Zuma emerged late on Tuesday night, shortly after a special sitting of the ANC's top decision-making body scheduled for Wednesday had been postponed.

President Zuma is under growing pressure to quit in favour of his deputy and African National Congress (ANC) party leader, with local media suggesting an exit deal is being hammered out.

Zuma, in power since 2009, has been deserted by prominent allies since being replaced in December as ANC leader by Cyril Ramaphosa, South Africa's deputy president, who is now lobbying behind the scenes for him to step down as president too.

The DA and the Inkatha Freedom Party want a resolution by Sunday evening, otherwise, they will meet on Monday to determine a way forward and expedite the matter in Parliament.

"Throughout this process, I am guided by the principle that the interests and needs of the South African people are paramount", Ramaphosa said.

The delay heightened speculation that Mr Zuma could finally yield to calls to step down.

Steenhuisen said the longer the talks dragged on, the more Ramaphosa risked appearing weak.

"This is the beginning of the end for Zuma", said Theo Venter, a political analyst at North-West University's business school in Potchefstroom, west of Johannesburg.

Ramaphosa told the ANC's parliamentary caucus in Cape Town on Wednesday that the option of granting Zuma immunity wasn't on the table, according to two lawmakers who were present and spoke on condition of anonymity.

At the same time, the party's secretary-general Ace Magashule is expected to brief ANC MPs on the matter on Thursday.

"We will be able to communicate further on President Zuma's position as president of the republic once we have finalised all pertinent matters", Ramaphosa said.

His presidency has been dominated by an economic slowdown, record unemployment and allegations of corruption.

President Zuma faces a no-confidence vote on February 22.

President Zuma has been South Africa's most controversial post-apartheid leader. Zuma and the Guptas deny any wrongdoing.

However, Mr Zuma still has his supporters within the ANC - including at least two of the top six - so nothing is definite.

Mashatile went on to say: "Where we are now, if the president does not want to resign voluntarily, we will recall him, like we did with President [Thabo] Mbeki".
