Traces of weedkiller found in baby food

A hearty bowl of oatmeal is a healthy way to start your day, but according to a new study, that bowl of oatmeal can contain unsafe levels of glyphosate, a weed-killing chemical linked to cancer.

Information from NBC News was included in this report.

"From a purely scientific point of view I do not think that the judgment makes sense", Paul Pharoah, a professor of cancer epidemiology at Britain's University of Cambridge, said after the ruling.

In light of the lawsuit and the World Health Organization's 2015 conclusion that the chemical is a "probable carcinogen", said EWG on Wednesday, "It is very troubling that cereals children like to eat contain glyphosate". Producing healthy, wholesome food is Quaker's number one priority, and we've been doing that for more than 140 years.

There was some evidence suggesting that people who used glyphosate in their jobs might have a higher rate of acute myeloid leukemia, but the numbers were too low to say for sure and the team said more study of that particular question would be needed. He said the Environmental Working Group is an activist group.

The herbicide glyphosate, which has been linked to cancer by the World Health Organization, was found in 43 of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats, the nonprofit Environmental Working Group found.

The state of California lists Glyphosate as a chemical "known to the state to cause cancer". Greenpeace urged the Australian government to start restricting the sale of Roundup - which is widely available in supermarkets and hardware stores - after a Californian court found it caused the cancer of a terminally ill man.

The reliance of the US company - and now, its German acquirer - on Roundup extends far beyond just selling it as a weed killer. However, the amounts of glyphosate found in the food is far below the allowable limits. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) both recently reaffirmed glyphosate does not cause cancer. In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeled glyphosate a carcinogen in 1985, but reversed its position in 1991.

Dr. Jennifer Lowry, Chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health tells KTVU it is not uncommon to find pesticides in our food. The EPA has researched this issue and has set rules that we follow as do farmers who grow crops including wheat and oats.

"We will appeal this decision and continue to vigorously defend this product, which has a 40-year history of safe use and continues to be a vital, effective and safe tool for farmers and others", he said.

The German company, which owns controversial agricultural company Monsanto, says herbicides containing glyphosate are safe. "Through the use of glyphosate, farmers are able to practise minimum tillage - protecting soil structure and nutrients and ultimately increasing the storage of soil carbon", she said. The team studied almost 45,000 people who had applied glyphosate as part of their jobs. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".

She says since oats are an important part of a diet, people should not avoid eating the products based on the study.

However, the levels that EWG considers to be high doesn't violate the legal limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
