Capitol Police arrest 70 on first day of Kavanaugh hearings

Protesters just interrupted the opening minutes of Day Two, just as Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) brought up the arrests from Tuesday. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) while interrupting Grassley, referring to the September 3 release to the committee of 42,000 documents relating to the nominee's work with past administrations. "I am not a pro-prosecution or pro-defense judge".

Democrats argued that not being able to see the pages makes it impossible for them to do their jobs and properly question Kavanaugh.

If no Democrat ultimately supports the nomination, the Republicans have no margin for error in a Senate they control by 50-49.

Democrats still have an uphill battle to derail Kavanaugh's nomination.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) accused Democrats of trying to conduct the hearing by "mob rule".

Twitter, meanwhile, exploded with accusations from anti-Trump commenters that Zina Bash, a White House aide sitting behind Judge Kavanaugh during the proceedings was flashing a "white power" symbol to the camera by resting her thumb and forefinger in a circle on her other arm.

Roe, of course, is the 1973 Supreme Court decision that declared abortion a constitutionally protected right.

Looking to avoid any stumbles, Judge Kavanaugh kept to his script, describing himself in his opening statement as a disciple of the law, though always with an eye for the Americans affected by his rulings.

I mean, nobody is calling for every document to be released. He said plenty of information on Kavanaugh has already been made public, including 415,000 pages turned over to the Judiciary Committee.

Guttenberg held out his hand to the judge, who paused for a moment before turning away as a security guard stepped in. Senate Republicans, who want to confirm Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court starts its new term in October, have instead been relying on the documents to be released through the Bush presidential library after they were reviewed by attorney William Burck, a process Democrats have deemed too partisan.

Kavanaugh also is likely to face questions about his views on investigating sitting presidents and the ongoing probe led by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27. He has been on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for 12 years and has authored 307 opinions, concurrences and dissents.

Kelly Jean Kelly wrote this story for VOA Learning English with reports from the Associated Press and VOA News.

President Trump weighed in on the hearing Tuesday, saying that it was a display of how "angry. the other side is".

Monday night, the committee received 42,000 pages of documents about Kavanaugh's years with the Bush administration, prompting complaints from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

The week of hearings on Kavanaugh's nomination began with a sense of inevitability that the 53-year-old appellate judge eventually will be confirmed, perhaps in time for the new term on October 1 and little more than a month before congressional elections.
