Facebook announces Oculus Quest, its first all-in-one VR gaming system

At Oculus Connect today, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company's next headset: The Oculus Quest. The headset rounds out Oculus' VR lineup, joining the Oculus Go and Rift as the company's new middle-level offering. It utilizes the inside-out tracking method with the help of four ultra-wide cameras that scan all the objects within one's environment in order to deliver accurate real-time positioning capability to the headset.

The new $399 Oculus Quest headset unveiled at the Facebook unit's developer conference is being aimed at gamers seeking immersion in virtual worlds, with other potential applications likely in the future. But a new device coming out next spring from Facebook-owned Oculus may convince more people to try the technology.

Zuckerberg said that the new Quest device represents the completion of Facebook's family of VR headsets, which includes the Rift and Go headsets. The built-in audio is improved from the Go, with deeper bass. Resolution on the Oculus Go is listed as 2560×1440 (1280×1440 per eye), which would make the Oculus Quest superior to either the Rift or the Go. As we previously reported, the device will ship with Touch Controllers like the ones found on the Oculus Rift, and it features all of the necessary sensors in the headset itself, completely ditching the need for cables (aside from charging, of course).

Still, with more powerful standalone VR devices and more compelling VR media, Zuckerberg said he is "confident we're going to get there". There are tracking issues to be solved, the configuration takes a fair bit of room, and it's very much a first-generation type of solution. "This is the all-in-one VR headset that we have been waiting for". Building lower-cost headgear and focusing more on indie titles (Beat Saber, for example, is a fabulous game) may be a better way to build the nascent VR ecosystem.
