Tuesday begins wet and windy over Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland, with a South West gale giving gusts to 60mph in exposed areas at first.

A severe weather alert warning of a "spell of very windy weather" will come into effect at 6am on Wednesday and will be lifted at 10pm that evening.

A clearance will develop in the southwest overnight, and will gradually edge northeastwards, with southeast winds becoming mostly moderate early tonight, but continuing strong and gusty for a time along east and south coasts.
