Moon, Kim may get together seven or eight times in 3 days

Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, hugged the first couple from the South at the red-carpeted airfield as a crowd of thousands lined up to cheer for them - some holding national flags, some holding unified-peninsula flags and some holding colorful plastic bouquets.

Since taking office in May past year, Moon has met Kim twice at the Koreas' shared border village of Panmunjom.

Mr Moon's chief of staff, however, played down the chance that Mr Moon's summit with Mr Kim would produce major progress in nuclear diplomacy.

Experts warned that the dovish leader might have a hard time trying to bridge the wide gap between USA and North Korea. The North is being treated to a veritable who's who from the world of high-powered South Korean business leaders, many of whom could be seen lining up to get on Moon's plane for Pyongyang on Tuesday, some looking a little taken aback at having their IDs scanned by a security person.

But his engagement push, which includes bringing some of South Korea's most powerful business tycoons to Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, strikes some observers as also boosting Kim as he tries to show his citizens that he's pivoting to economic improvement and - crucial yet unspoken - raising his impoverished nation up to South Korea's level, after his claim previous year to have completed his nuclear arsenal.

In it, the two Koreas announced they would work with the United States and China this year to declare an official end to the Korean War.

His government wants the United States to respond by jointly declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War, but USA officials want Kim to take additional steps that can prove he's honest about denuclearization.

An end-of-war declaration, Cossa said, could be taken by Trump as "further justification to follow this instinct, which in my view would be destabilizing and would lead to a great push (at least among the defense community in South Korea) for development of an independent South Korean nuclear capability".

With the main business of the day complete, North Korea was expected to hold a huge mass games spectacle in the evening, with Moon as the special guest.

In their constitutions both North and South Korea claim sovereignty over the whole of the peninsula.

Moon's office has said this week's summit talks will focus on how to achieve denuclearization, lower a military standoff between the Koreas and promote their ties.

Officials say many of Moon's official events in Pyongyang, including the leaders' opening summit remarks, will be broadcast live in South Korea.

Moon is on a three-day trip, following in the footsteps of his predecessors Kim Dae Jung in 2000 and mentor Roh Moo Hyun in 2007. The choreographed activities included Kim and his sister, Kim Yo Jong, positioning Moon on a platform to review military troops in clear view of TV cameras, as the AP's Foster Klug noted on Twitter.

The two countries have technically been at war for nearly 70 years now. Moon and Kim met for the first time on April 27, and held their second meeting on May 26.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is hosting Moon Jae-in, the first South Korean President to travel to Pyongyang in more than a decade.

"My aim for the summit is to speak with Chairman Kim Jong-un with open hearts", Moon said at Monday's meeting with his senior aides, saying that building trust is key to improving inter-Korean relations.

Some experts believe Moon is preparing for the resumption of inter-Korean economic cooperation projects after diplomacy eventually yields results.

A second round of official talks will also take place on Wednesday, after which they are expected to release a joint statement as well as a military pact to prevent armed clashes.

Lindsey Graham, who tweeted he was concerned the visit would undermine efforts by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley to impose "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang.

The conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving USA -led United Nations forces including South Korea technically still at war with the North.
