No strawberry tampering in WA: minister

Australian authorities investigating after needles found in strawberries

Previously, nearly a dozen incidents were reported in six brands of strawberries across six states and territories.

"This here is a video of our strawberries being dumped, this here is worth more than you could ever imagine and within three days we lost it all".

"It's such a shame".

Strawberries are now in season, which makes the timing of the recall potentially more punishing for industry stakeholders.

He told police that he located the needle in his sink after preparing strawberries for his family.

Joshua Gane said on Facebook: "He bites through a strawberry and swallows half a sewing needle".

South Australian police meanwhile said that they were advising members of the public to check punnets of Mal's Black Label strawberries following a report of a needle found inside the fruit on Sunday morning.

"We're not going to stand for it". There has also been suggestions of using metal detectors and tamper-proof packaging.

At least seven brands of strawberries have been affected, ABC added.

There have been concerns that copy cat could be replicating the previous incidents of sewing needles being hidden inside strawberry stocks from a Sunshine Coast-based supplier.

In this September 14, 2018, photo, empty shelves, normally stocked with strawberry punnets, are seen at a Coles Supermarket in Brisbane.

New Zealand imports strawberries from Australia during the off-season in this market.

"The food waste associated with this matter is significant and has been unavoidable", Aldi said in a statement.

Coles also said it recommenced the supply of strawberries into its stores on Monday afternoon.

"They're just so cheap at the moment they nearly sell themselves", Marks says.

Consumers in Queensland were the first to report finding needles embedded inside strawberries.

Police in Queensland believe the discovery of a "thin metal object" in a supermarket strawberry basket last week was likely a copycat incident.

A $100,000 reward has been offered to find the strawberry sabotage culprit, as another case emerges.

"I would urge anyone with information that may be relevant to this incident in any way to contact police as soon as possible", she said.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt ordered the national food safety watchdog to investigate Queensland's handling of the needle scare.

The Queensland Strawberry Growers' Association has speculated the act may have been carried out by a "disgruntled ex-employee", according to the BBC.

"I hope we catch them and prosecute them and they spend a lot of time behind bars, because that's what they deserve", Mr Pyne said. "He's buggering the community and destroying the wider industry".

"This is a serious criminal offence that these people are engaged in, and I think every West Australian will want the book thrown at these people".

Mr Calle said it was only a small number of punnets affected out of millions, and he anxious the media coverage was encouraging copycats.

"All we can do is put things in place to make sure it doesn't happen, but how do we stop a heart attack? It's a criminal act". "Just phoned the school after a friend had warned me & the office ladies are straight onto it thank god", another said. He said other growers were being forced to do the same.
