Tropical Storm Gordon has made landfall

This cone shows the possible track of Tropical Storm Florence which could hit the US East Coast as a hurricane this weekend

Tropical Storm Gordon made landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast just before 10 p.m.

The Category 3 hurricane's maximum sustained winds Wednesday morning are estimated to be 120 miles per hour. The storm was moving at 14 mph (23 kph), some 40 miles (64 km) west of Mobile, Alabama.

The child died when a tree fell on top of a mobile home in Pensacola as Gordon whipped the region with tropical storm-force winds and heavy downpours, a spokeswoman with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said.

Flash flood warnings went into effect over parts of the western Florida panhandle and southern Alabama.

A confirmed tornado was reported by the National Weather Service near Pea Ridge in Santa Rosa County.

Trucks with the Alabama Department of Transportation work to block off a flooded part of US Highway 98 while fighting rain from Tropical Storm Gordon on Wednesday in Spanish Fort, Ala. "The storms already in the north-central portion of the Gulf of Mexico at the moment and those storms will continue pulling north-northwest over the next 12 hours while Gordon moves on".

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana all declared states of emergency to better mobilize state resources and National Guard troops for the storm.

"This storm has every possibility to track further in our direction", Edwards said during a news conference Monday evening.

In New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell had issued a voluntary evacuation notice for areas outside the levee system.

Before a slight decline in wind speed, it was thought that Gordon would be the first Atlantic basin hurricane to make landfall in 2018. Beachgoers in the area were being warned Wednesday that it's too early to return to the water; risky rip currents prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it's illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center said Gordon was weakening on a path into Arkansas after striking the coast at 113 km/h, just shy of hurricane strength, near Pascagoula, Mississippi.
