At least 800 troops to be sent to US-Mexico border

James Mattis the defense secretary is to deploy 800 troops along the US-Mexico border at the urging of President Donald Trump

This comes as Defense Secretary James Mattis is expected to sign an order to send more troops to the southern border.

Mattis is responding to a request from President Donald Trump, who says he's "bringing out the military" to address what he's calling a national emergency at the border.

Those support roles include "aerial detection, maintaining and repairing vehicles, and providing logistical support so that the Border Patrol is able to get badges back on the border to enforce the law", Amstutz said. That will add to the estimated 2,000 National Guard troops there since April.

Several administration officials say it is anticipated that the Pentagon will pay for the bulk of the mission by using active duty troops.

The caravan swelled dramatically soon after crossing the Mexican border on October 19, but sickness, fear and police harassment have whittled down its numbers.

The migrants have largely been disconnected from news reports about them while on the road.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told Fox News on Thursday night that "everything is on the table" in regard to the migrant caravan.

Some respondents said they could understand why people in other countries would want to come to the United States, and one man expressed doubt that any significant number of them are "bad hombres", a term once used by President Trump.

"They will be stopped!"

The troops will not engage in lethal operations to stop the migrants.

The mission of the Border Community Liaison Program is to facilitate the exchange of information between the Rio Grande Valley Sector and the community to advance operational effectiveness and coordinate our shared interests with the community to preserve national security.

The troops will also provide tents and medical care for border authorities in those areas.

Federal law prohibits the use of active-duty service members for law enforcement inside the US unless specifically authorized by Congress.
