Turkish forensic investigators leave Saudi Arabian Consulate in Ankara.

Turkey media said Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government, vanished soon after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and was said to have been killed there.

Security forces began setting up barricades in front of the residence just hours after Consul Mohammed al-Otaibi flew out of the country on a 2 p.m. flight, state media reported.

On Monday it appeared the Saudis were set to change their story and say that Khashoggi was killed in a botched interrogation.

But late Monday evening - after Turkish authorities placed high iron barriers in front of the consulate - a motorcade of six cars drew up and Turkish police and prosecutors entered the premises. Leaked surveillance footage show diplomatic cars traveled to the consul's home shortly after Khashoggi's disappearance at the consulate on October 2.

The Saudi government has denied any role in the alleged killing of the Washington Post columnist.

In a separate statement issued on the same day, Nauert said Pompeo had also met with his Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir. The king greeted Pompeo by saying: "I hope you are comfortable here".

Soon after, Pompeo arrived at a royal palace, where he thanked King Salman "for accepting my visit on behalf of President (Donald) Trump" before the two went into a closed-door meeting.

Khashoggi disappeared two weeks ago at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Turkey had wanted to search the consulate for days. On Monday, sources told CNN that the report will acknowledge that Khashoggi died in a botched interrogation, one that was meant to lead to his abduction from Turkey.

"We can't say anything about that if we allow Saudi Arabia to do it and all we do is a diplomatic slap on the wrist".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Saudi Arabia to talk to King Salman and the 33-year-old crown prince about the fate of the journalist who wrote critically about the Saudis for The Washington Post.

Both men were seen smiling and exchanging pleasantries ahead of a closed-door meeting to discuss the case of Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen and United States resident.

Speaking to the Fox Business Network on Wednesday, Trump again cited counterterrorism cooperation with Saudi Arabia and the kingdom's contracts with USA defense contractors.

The case has provoked an global outcry, with US President Donald Trump threatening "severe punishment" if it turns out Khashoggi was killed in the consulate and European allies urging "a credible investigation" and accountability for those responsible.

Turkish crime scene investigators dressed in coveralls and gloves entered the consulate Monday, almost two weeks after the disappearance and alleged slaying of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi there.
