Toyota recall affects over 50000 United Kingdom cars

Japanese vehicle giant Toyota said Friday it is recalling more than 2.4 million hybrid cars over a fault that could cause crashes, just a month after another recall affecting hybrids.

The identified fault occurs when a specific hybrid component failure, coupled with hard acceleration, causes the vehicle to lose power rather than enter a fail-safe driving mode.

Toyota said it would update the software of the vehicles to remedy the problem for free.

This means that the vehicle could lose power and stall while, according to the firm, power steering and braking remain operational. A Toyota official told BBC that the issue would be fixed with the help of a software upgrade spanning over 40 minutes.

Vehicles in Europe, China and other regions are also affected. Toyota did not say how many customers reported stalling incidents, whether there were accidents, or when customers could bring in their cars for fix.

A total of 744 Prius cars produced between Oct 2008 and Nov 2014 are affected in this recall.

Toyota Ireland said they will be contacting all affected customers directly by mail to arrange to have their vehicles checked. In November 2017, Toyota recalled the 2012-2015 Prius Plug-in for fuses that could similarly shut down the entire auto while driving.

Toyota said it had received three reports from Japan by the end of September that related to the problem and it reported them to the transport ministry. About 1.25 million of the cars are in Japan and 830,000 in North America, he said.

Prius hybrids can stall without warning due to a software error that won't detect powertrain problems and correspondingly won't place the vehicle in a "limp home" mode that restricts speed.
