Saudi Arabia Vows Retaliation if Punished over Missing Critic

Noticeably absent from discussions was Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, whom Khashoggi wrote critically about for The Washington Post and whose rise to power prompted the writer to go into a self-imposed exile in the U.S.

"Per two sources who spoke to CNN, however, the Saudis are preparing a report admitting that they meant to abduct and bring Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, but that he was inadvertently killed in the process".

The government of Saudi Arabia on Sunday vowed to retaliate with "greater action" if the Trump administration follows through on punishing that country for its alleged involvement in the apparent murder of a dissident earlier this month, Fox News reported.

One source cautioned that the report was still being prepared and could change, CNN said.

The president provided no evidence to back his comment, but said that during a phone call the Saudi King had firmly denied knowing what had happened to Mr Khashoggi. "That was our first hope, our first hope was that he was not killed, but maybe that's not looking too good. from what we're hearing", Mr Trump said.

President Donald Trump says he's spoken to King Salman of Saudi Arabia, who "denies any knowledge of whatever may have happened" to missing Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The America-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared in early October after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Khashoggi, a familiar face on Arab talk shows, moved to the United States previous year fearing retribution for his criticism of Prince Mohammed, who has cracked down on dissent with arrests.

"BGR is no longer working for Saudi Arabia", said Jeffrey H. Birnbaum, president of BGR's public relations division.

Asian stocks bounced modestly on Tuesday, gaining a toe-hold after a week of heavy losses, although increasing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the West fanned geopolitical concerns and capped gains.

Turkish authorities have an audio recording indicating that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, a Turkish official and a security source have told Reuters, and have shared evidence with countries including Saudi Arabia and the United States.

In Istanbul, meanwhile, investigators entered the consulate for their own investigation. On October 2, Khashoggi went to the Saudi consulate with his fiancée to get documents proving his divorce.

U.S. lawmakers have been demanding to scrap the $110 billion mega defence deal with the Saudis, whereas heads of several companies, CEOs, newspapers have announced not to attend an upcoming finance conference in Saudi Arabia.
