Turkey yet to share Khashoggi audio, video evidence with US -sources

Turkish officials have claimed Saudi agents killed and dismembered him.

A pro-government Turkish newspaper on Wednesday published a gruesome recounting of the alleged slaying of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, just as America's top diplomat arrived in the country for talks over the Washington Post columnist's disappearance.

Turkish officials have stepped up pressure on the Saudis over the episode, providing the Washington Post with scans of passports that they say were carried by seven men who were part of a Saudi team involved in killing Khashoggi. The kingdom has previously denied allegations that Khashoggi was killed. It's unclear if Turkey offered him the chance to hear any such recordings.

The investigators examined the garden, and some could be seen on the roof of the building.

United States media and officials have called on Ankara to release the evidence, but the Turkish investigators have not done so yet.

The report by the newspaper cited what it described as an audio recording of Khashoggi's slaying.

He avoided comment when a CBS reported tried to question him on a flight from Washington to NY - and a Secret Service agent ran interference, telling a reporter there was a 'time and place'.

Turkish officials, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential intelligence, have said that all 15 suspects are Saudi security officers, intelligence agents or government employees.

Trump continued to stand by Saudi Arabia but said he is "not giving cover at all" to Riyadh, whom he repeatedly called a close United States ally.

"I want to find out what happened, where is the fault, and we will probably know that by the end of the week", Trump later told reporters.

"We have asked for it".

A suspect identified by Turkey in the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was a frequent companion of the kingdom's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The crown prince and his father, King Salman, have denied any knowledge of Khashoggi's whereabouts, repeatedly asserting that he left the consulate freely.

Trump, it added, had "signaled that he is more than ready to assist in that dodge".

President Donald Trump has criticized rapidly mounting global condemnation of Saudi Arabia over the mystery of a missing Saudi journalist, warning of a rush to judgment and echoing the Saudis' request for patience. What are we going to do?

Asked aboard his airplane whether he had heard any audio of Khashoggi's capture, Pompeo declined to comment, but his spokeswoman later told reporters he had not.

More importantly, the administration has been counting on Saudi Arabia to step in to prevent oil prices from skyrocketing once it re-imposes energy-related sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal from which Trump withdrew. The search by Turkish investigators included the roof and garage and the deployment of a drone over the area.

While Trump has voiced support for Saudi Arabia as the investigation continues, some USA lawmakers have all but accepted Turkey's version of the events - that a team of Saudi agents arrived in Istanbul and killed Khashoggi when he went to the consulate to pick up documents he needed to marry his fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, a Turkish national who waited in vain for Khashoggi to emerge from the consulate.

In 1992, the Washington Post reported on a newly uncovered top-secret 1947 State Department cable between US President Harry Truman and King Abdulaziz ibn al-Saud, in which the former pledged, "One of the basic policies of [the] United States in [the] Near East is unqualifiedly to support [the] territorial integrity and political independence of Saudi Arabia".

"Arab governments have been given free rein to continue silencing the media at an increasing rate", he wrote.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held separate meetings with Turkey's president and foreign minister for around 40 minutes each on Wednesday in the Turkish capital, Ankara. "That is a big factor in my eyes, and I hope they haven't".

Trump defended himself on Monday, tweeting that "I have no financial interests in Saudi Arabia (or Russian Federation, for that matter)".

But there has been criticism of some of his moves, including Riyadh's involvement in the Yemen war, the arrest of women activists, and a diplomatic row with Canada.
