100-day performance: PM Imran ensures to uplift the weak, provide justice

Pakistan by Haider Ali | Published

Sikhs from India have traveled to Pakistan to pay homage at the shrine for years but the trip is a hard one to make due to a contentious relationship and security concerns.

Speaking at the occasion, Kaur said if the Berlin Wall can fall, hatred and mistrust between India and Pakistan can also end. She said India will not attend the event till Pakistan stops cross-border terrorism. "Past teaches us that we need to keep moving forward", Khan said.

Pakistan's limitless capacity for treacherous behavior is matched only by India's bottomless ability to get surprised by it. India's outrage at being blindsided by Imran Khan and Pakistan army chief General Qamar Bajwa during the groundbreaking ceremony for Kartarpur Sahib corridor is in equal parts sad and amusing.

The fact that India and Pakistan have agreed to open the Kartarpur corridor shows that despite the typical mood of confrontation between the countries, reconciliation is possible.

Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Wednesday that India will not respond to Pakistan's invitation to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit in Islamabad, ANI reported.

While PM Imran Khan has said that the two countries need to learn from past mistakes and move forward, India has maintained that talks can not be restarted till Islamabad continues to harbour and support terrorists.

"I am happy when something is grounded in positive hope".

He said he didn't understand the reaction in India about Sidhu's visit to Pakistan. "In opening the Kartarpur border, both governments have opened a new chapter in which many things previously impossible will be possible", said Sidhu. He said 120 million Sikhs have been waiting for this for 71 years.

Imran Khan's comments at the event on peace efforts and resolving the Kashmir issue have angered India. "Imagine, once trade begins, once our relationship is fixed, how much both nations could benefit", he said and reiterated that if India takes one step forward, Pakistan will take two steps forward in friendship.

General Bajwa was among the big gathering of guests at the groundbreaking ceremony, including diplomats, Indian journalists, Sikh devotees and a ministerial level delegation representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Its a step toward peace which our region needs", Pakistani military spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor quoted him as saying. The visit was not aimed at promoting Pak-India relations, he added.

Sidhu is a leader of the opposition party Indian National Congress and had recently visited Pakistan and called for restoring peace between the two neighbours.

The Gurdwara Kartarpur Darbar Sahib in Pakistan's Narowal city holds religious significance for the Sikh community; It is the place where Baba Guru Nanak settled down after his travels as a missionary.

Politicians on both sides have hailed the decision as an impetus for peace between the two countries that have fought several wars in their seventy-year existence.

Many in India construed this statement as Pakistan's desire for a change in Indian leadership.

The Kartarpur corridor is supposed to be completed and opened well ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of the Sikh guru on November 23, 2019.
