The impact of Tuesday's election will be a topic of much debate, but one thing's clear: Women made big strides. That surpasses the record of 84 women set by the current Congress. Women could at best gain one seat in the Senate, potentially beating the record 23 women now in the chamber.

The US election has swept a record number of women into Congress, fired up by disgust of Donald Trump, emboldened by the #MeToo movement and making the Democratic Party more diverse and younger than ever.

Ayanna Pressley became the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives for MA - a state with that has a black population of only eight percent.

Beyond the historic victories by women, the first openly gay man was elected to governor in Colorado, and Florida passed an amendment to restore voting rights to more than 1 million people. Edward Brooke of MA, took office in 1967 as the first black politician to be elected by popular vote after the 17th Amendment was ratified in 1913.

Among this new class, history was made in pairs: American voters elected the two first ever Latinas to represent Texas, the first Muslim American women in Congress, and the first Native American women in Congress.

Omar served a single term in the Minnesota state legislature before she won Minnesota's Fifth District.

"Can a congresswoman wear her hair in braids? We have arrived, change is coming and the future belongs to all of us".

Tlaib was elected Tuesday to serve Michigan's Thirteenth District seat, which includes the Detroit area.

The elections saw the Democrats take the House of Representatives, with a majority of 222 reps so far. Her platform covered issues that included protecting New York's clean water, combating opioid abuse and addiction and reducing student loan debt. Davids is also a member of Kansas's LGBT community. Polis, who declared victory late Tuesday night, has always been outspoken in favour of marijuana legalisation.

Women led a parade of victories and unexpected upsets Tuesday to win control of the House for the Democrats.

Pressley, 44, had received an endorsement from former President Barack Obama last month, and New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in September.

We spoke with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about her plans for Congress.

This year's swing was, in large part, because of independent women, who voted for Democratic candidates for the House, 56 per cent to 39 per cent, as well as white women, who have started voting differently in recent years, according to CNN's exit poll data. Stacey Abrams of Georgia, who had hoped to become the first black woman in the country to be elected governor, was trailing her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, early Wednesday.
