California Camp Fire death jumps to 63, missing 631

A wildfire burns at the Salvation Army Camp on Nov. 10 2018 in Malibu

The Camp fire is now by far the worst wildfire in California history.

Remains of seven more victims have been found after a number of blazes devastated the state, bringing the total death toll to 63.

Authorities attributed the high death toll in part to the staggering speed with which the wind-driven flames, fuelled by desiccated scrub and trees, raced through Paradise, a town of 27,000 residents.

TRT World's Ediz Tiyansan reports from California.

Almost 9,000 homes and other buildings, including most of the town, were incinerated last Thursday night, hours after the blaze erupted, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The missing persons' list has doubled since earlier on Thursday.

Sheriff Kory Honea said almost 300 people initially reported as missing had been found alive, and the list would keep fluctuating as people were found safe or identified among the dead.

President Trump is scheduled to travel to the Golden State on Saturday to visit victims of fires in both the northern and southern ends of the state. By Thursday evening, the blaze had chewed through 141,000 acres and 11,862 structures, destroying an entire town in a matter of hours.

The Woolsey Fire has razed 98,000 acres (39,660 hectares) and has been 62 percent contained.

Information for contacting the Federal Emergency Management Agency for assistance was posted on a board that allowed people to write the names of those they believed were missing.

Those who survived the flames but lost homes were moving in temporarily with friends or relatives or bunking down in American Red Cross shelters. "There are more evacuees, more people running out of money for hotels".

That led authorities to devise a staggered evacuation plan - one that they used when fire came again last week. Officials set up three phone lines for loved ones to call and said they had to adjust to a new system of organizing the calls.

Nicole said she fled once her home's mailbox caught fire and neighbors' propane tanks began exploding.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin also spoke at the meeting, saying: "I'm here just to reassure everybody that we as a community are going to do our utmost to help ourselves. I love you, '" Nicole said.
