Crashed Lion Air jet flew four times with damaged airspeed gauge

It was found that on the flight that crashed in Asia this sensor was giving off incorrect data, meaning the pilots weren't flying in the right position.

A week after the disaster, there is still no answer as to what caused the crash.

A Lion Air passenger plane that crashed last week with 189 people on board experienced airspeed indicator problems on its last four flights, Indonesian investigators announced on Monday.

The recorder shows the jet's last four flights all had an airspeed indicator problem. If pilots aren't careful, they can cause severe nose-down trim settings that make it impossible to level a plane.

Modern jetliners have redundant measurements to help pilots spot and disregard a single reading that looks unlikely and possibly erroneous. The budget airline has frequently received complaints over safety issues, poor service and unreliable scheduling.

"This is a preventative measure (the accident) is a very expensive lesson for us".

But authorities will also question the pilots from the previous flight from Bali to Jakarta about the exact nature of the problems they encountered.

Around 137 body bags containing victim remains have been taken to a funeral home ready to be identified.

"But it is quite straightforward and we train for this all the time", the captain said. "We have flaws, but we doing the best we can".

According to Bloomberg, the safety warning is linked to the crash of a Lion Air aircraft last week off the coast of Indonesia, killing an estimated 189 people.

All were found to be airworthy although two required repairs for "minor" problems.

The company went on to say that the investigation into what happened with Lion Air flight 610 is ongoing and that it would "co-operate fully and provide technical assistance" as requested.

But the accident has also resurrected concerns about Indonesia's poor air safety record, which until recently saw its carriers facing years-long bans from entering European Union and USA airspace.

A crucial sensor that is the subject of a Boeing safety bulletin was replaced on a Lion Air jet the day before it plunged into the Java Sea and possibly worsened other problems with the plane, Indonesian investigators have revealed.

Attendees gathered on the deck of a ship that was ferried out to the crash site where Lion Air flight JT-610 plunged into the ocean at high speed. There were no survivors. A preliminary report is expected at the end of the month. This far, police have been able to identify 14 victims from the nearly 140 body bags of human remains retrieved from the Java Sea.

Indonesia's rescue agency said Sunday that wreckage spotted by divers had turned out to be only pieces of skin of the Boeing Co. jet rather than the main fuselage.

On Thursday (Nov 1), the SAR team found the flight data recorder (FDR) of the aircraft, and now the search focus was on another part of the aircraft's black box, namely, the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

This isn't to say that the Lion Air crew was necessarily in the latter group-despite safety problems in the past with this airline, this specific crew may have absolutely been first-rate aviators, yet still suffered the same fate-but the fact is that we're in an era of increasing automation in aviation that's still 100 percent overseen by human pilots.
