Democrat Andrew Gillum concedes Florida governor's race following vote recount

Gillum Concedes Florida Governor’s Race Ron DeSantis

Andrew Gillum was seeking to become the first African-American governor of Florida.

Democrat Andrew Gillum has admitted defeat to his Republican rival in the race to be named Florida's governor - for the second time.

Gillum offered little insight as to what he plans to do next but informed his supporters to "stay tuned" in the video shared to Facebook. "This has been the journey of our lives".

The race between DeSantis, who resigned from Congress earlier this year to run, and Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, was an extraordinarily bitter one. "This was about creating the kind of change in this state that really allows for the voices of everyday people to show up again in our government, in our state and in our communities". "We know that this fight continues".

The Senate race in Florida between Democratic Senator Bill Nelson and Republican Governor Rick Scott, meanwhile, will get a hand recount, as the machine recount placed Scott in the lead by only 0.15 percent, well within the 0.25 percent margin to require it. The machine recount had DeSantis still leading by over 3,000 votes. If the county had three or four more hours, it would have made the deadline to recount ballots in the Senate race, she said.

"Campaigns are meant to be vigorously debated contests of ideas and competing visions for the future", DeSantis said.

The slim possibility existed that Gillum could have contested the results by a lawsuit before the end of the month, but Gillum appeared to rule out any further action from his campaign in his comments Saturday. If you have an election margin of 0.21 percent and a variance of 0.12 percent, the variance of your machine count is half the margin you are trying to correct. He and other Democrats repeatedly said they were sticking with the campaign until all legally cast votes were counted.

The race had gone to a recount, with results due by a Sunday deadline, as has a narrow Senate race between outgoing governor Rick Scott and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Snipes did insist that the ballots were still in the elections building.

At a warehouse in Broward County - which has had numerous problems throughout the election - dozens of volunteers sitting at folding tables cheered loudly when they were told they had finished the recount Friday morning for the Senate race and could go home for the day.
