England have 'great chance' to win second Test despite Sri Lanka fightback

England's win in Galle was their first overseas Test victory in 14 matches

Roshen Silva's assured 85 helped Sri Lanka secure a first-innings lead after England were bowled out for 290 on day one.

Sri Lanka face a hard task to stay alive in the three-test series, having lost spinner Rangana Herath to retirement and skipper Dinesh Chandimal to a groin injury. Jack Leach then picked off opener Kaushal Silva in a tricky period before stumps, leaving the hosts 26-1 heading into day two.

Rory Burns (59) had earlier hit his maiden Test fifty to get England off to a positive start in Kandy and although there was a wobble after the opener's dismissal, Root held the innings together and was rewarded with a 15th Test hundred.

Adil Rashid had struck twice after lunch to raise the tourists' hopes of securing a crucial first innings lead on a seemingly turning pitch.

Dananjaya frustrated England's spinners before falling to Moeen Ali leg before for 31.

The players returned to the field for one over which nightwatchman Jack Leach successfully negotiated with England ending the day on 0/0.

Stokes, who batted at number five in his team's opening win last week, was boosted up the order in the latest bid to find a solid number three.

Despite figures of 3 for 70, Leach accepted he could have bowled better than he managed in Sri Lanka's first innings.

"If we can get England before 250 it will be a gettable target for us", he added.

"The next couple of days are going to be exciting for spin bowlers and batters are going to be on their toes", predicted Curran.

According to global cricket rules an umpire can dock five runs if he feels the batsman ran a short run deliberately.

"He's pretty much been faultless, not really stood out at all, which is probably a good thing for a wicketkeeper, and long-term I see him as a focal part of the test team".

"I don't think Roshen did it deliberately", said Dimuth Karunaratne at the close. Stokes has spent most of his 47-Test career batting at No 5 or 6, and has only twice batted as high as No 4 - both times when England were chasing quick runs.

On Wednesday's first day, first Jos Buttler with 63 and then some lusty hitting from Sam Curran who bludgeoned 64 lifted England to a competitive 285 all out after being in trouble at 89 for 4 and then 171 for 7 after winning the toss and electing to bat.
