A Fly Jamaica Boeing 757 airliner heading for Toronto made an emergency landing at the Georgetown, Guyana worldwide airport after the pilot reported problems with the plane's hydraulic system.

"At this time, we believe that all 118 passengers and eight crew members are safe".

That included 82 Canadians, one American, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian.

About 20 minutes into the flight, the pilot indicated the plane was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a Friday morning news conference.

Bowen said two elderly passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution and the plane was safely evacuated.

Of that number, six persons received minor injuries.

Boeing Co is looking into the incident, a spokesman said.

"Then the plane swerved to the right and the right wing was flapping and it ripped apart away from the main fuselage", he said.

After requesting an emergency landing, the plane returned to the airport, but overran the runway and crashed into a fence.

"I'm still shaking, I'm so shocked", the Toronto man said from a Georgetown hotel.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority launched an investigation, and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which automatically assists with inquiries under worldwide rules, was notified, officials said.

Patterson said that the United States' National Transportation Safety Board has been informed.

"We can confirm that Fly Jamaica flight OJ256 bound for Toronto returned to Georgetown with a technical problem and has suffered an accident on landing", the brief statement read.

A spokesperson for Fly Jamaica said it is providing local assistance for its passengers and "will furhter release information as soon as it is available".
