France strikes back against Trump, emphasising a lack of 'common decency'

В Нидерландах отвергли идею создания европейской армии

Two days later, Trump responded with a string of tweets in which he highlighted Macron's relatively low approval rating and endorsed French nationalist movements.

Discussing the growing dangers from cyber-hacking, meddling in electoral processes and the U.S. decision to withdraw from a missile treaty, Mr Macron told Europe 1 radio last week Europe needed to "protect itself against China, Russia and even the United States".

Macron repeated his earlier remark - which had so angered Trump - on the need for Europe to take charge of its own security instead of relying exclusively on the US. Needless to say, it will take way longer than one night to contain this threat of a flood of nationalism spreading fear, distrust and hatred of the other, but the cause needs champions and there are few volunteers around stepping forward to stand beside the French president.

"I think he's doing this for American politics", Macron said in a televised interview on board France's Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea.

After Trump was gone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who recently announced that she will not be seeking re-election, made an impassioned plea for global cooperation at the peace forum, saying World War I had "made clear what disastrous consequences a lack of compromise in politics and diplomacy can have".

- The US is our historical ally and will remain so.

The leader of France tried to avoid a direct answer to a series of tweets Donald trump, in which he put Makron "to look at" some of the statements of the latter regarding, in particular, of a European army.

"It was Germany in World Wars One and Two - How did that work out for France? Pay for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or not", he tweeted.

The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of nearly 10%.

"They were starting to learn German in Paris before the United States came along", he added, in a low blow sure to gall many French.

"Do we want to be vassals who obey decisions taken by the United States while clinging to the hem of their pants?" He described nationalism as betrayed patriotism and at the same time urged other leaders who were present on that day to reject the act of nationalism.

The barrage of tweets came as France marked the third anniversary of the Bataclan terrorist attacks, which left 130 people dead.

The fight became more intense after Macron publicly denounced "nationalism" during a speech Sunday.

The French army appeared to poke fun at Mr Trump over the decision, tweeting an image of an officer crawling under barbed wire in wet weather with the words: "There's rain, but it's no problem".

"We are going to carry out very concrete operations with the Americans", he said, citing the "perfect co-ordination and excellent execution" of a joint operation with the USA and United Kingdom in Syria last April.

The public dispute was in sharp contrast with the friendly tone that had been a hallmark of the relationship between the ex-banker and the former real estate developer since Mr Macron was elected in 2017.
