Manafort lied after pleading guilty, Mueller's team says

Mueller says Manafort violated plea agreement by lying to investigators

Prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller's office said Monday that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort violated his plea agreement with the government by lying to federal investigators "on a variety of subject matters".

"After signing the plea agreement, Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters, which constitute breaches of the agreement", Mueller's office said.

He also disagreed that he breached his plea agreement.

If Manafort is found to be lying under oath, it's possible that his deal with Mueller will be revoked and he could be charged with perjury in addition to his tax fraud and conspiracy convictions.

He avoided a second criminal trial in DC by pleading guilty to conspiracy charges. Monday's filing in Washington federal court was eagerly anticipated after the sides sought a 10-day extension to report on Manafort's cooperation - a tight window that led some observers to speculate that Manafort had delivered information that could lead to charges against others in Trump's circle.

Rudy Giuliani, who represents Trump in the Russian Federation investigation, told Reuters in October that he had periodically spoken with Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, and that he believed Manafort had not provided any information to prosecutors that was damaging to the president.

Manafort pleaded guilty to conspiracy and witness tampering on September 14, nearly a year after he was first charged and following his conviction by a jury in a separate but related case on eight tax and banking crimes. That included his work on the Trump campaign as well as his Ukrainian political work, which remains under investigation by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY.

Prosecutors dismissed bank fraud charges as part of the deal - charges that could possibly be refiled. Earlier this month, there were mounting tensions between Mueller and Manafort over Manafort's apparent lack of cooperation with the investigation, multiple sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. The defendant agreed to cooperate with the prosecutors in the ongoing probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The special counsel's office says it will provide more details at a later date. The former Trump campaign chairman has met with prosecutors at least nine times, amounting to hours of discussions about what he knows.
