Mickelson edges Woods in playoff to earn $9m cash prize

On Friday afternoon, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson took the course at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas for a $9 million showdown.

"You've been doing that crap to me for 20 years, I don't know why I'm surprised now", Mickelson told Woods, who then surprisingly conceded Mickelson's putt from three feet to keep the match alive on the 18th having already made his own birdie on the par five.

Mickelson did have a putt for birdie on the first, but he hung it out to the left, and Woods was on the board for $200,000, which was donated by Woods to the Tiger Woods Foundation, After that, Mickelson won three closest to the pin competitions as Nos. The questions poked fun at them over a lack of crowd, over how late after the peak of their rivalry the match is taking place, and the absence of another top golfer - Jordan Spieth.

"A day like today is not going to take anything away from Tiger's greatness, he's the greatest of all time, but to have some smack talk for the next few years means a lot to me because I don't have much on him", Mickelson said. "It's not the Masters or the US Open, but it is nice to have a little something on you".

The five-time major champion who desperately and jokingly wanted to prevail to hold some measure of gloating over his longtime nemesis won four holes in regulation - three when Woods made a bogey.

However following an ideal tee shot on the 379-yard par four and an approach to eight feet, Mickelson missed his birdie attempt after Woods had also failed to convert from slightly further.

As the action involving Woods and Mickelson failed to offer much in the way of entertainment, former National Basketball Association star Charles Barkley - working as a television pundit at the event - was handed a challenge of his own by Astros pitcher Justin Verlander. "It was back and forth and very competitive on a golf course that was playing on the tricky side".

The pay-per-view was made available free online after some services had technical difficulties.

In what seemed like an error or some other network mistake, viewers watching on Bleacher Report Live were able to watch the event without paying the $19.99 the event was supposed to cost.

Representatives from Turner didn't respond to requests from The Associated Press for comment.

The match was billed as a chance for viewers to watch an untraditional golf broadcast as both golfers and their caddies were mic'd up. Woods, 1 down at the time and facing elimination, chipped in from the back of the green to tie the match up and send it to the 18th.

"I felt so much pressure these last couple days as we had the buildup to it, from hole one, " Mickelson said. I wanna see Tiger and Phil throw down a challenge bet at him.

"Maybe at match play you could but that might not be the best thing, " Mickelson said. "It had that flavor of a Tuesday practice round with more at stake".
