Nooses found outside Mississippi legislature day before Senate vote

But race has become a dominant issue as Hyde-Smith faces Espy, a former congressman and USA agriculture secretary who would become Mississippi's first black senator since Reconstruction.

A spokeswoman for the secretary of state's office, Leah Rupp Smith, said observers from the office were seeing "steady but slow" turnout around the state, with few lines.

Hyde-Smith has never trailed in polling, and Democrats acknowledge she's likely to win, but they argue that her flubs have given Espy a very narrow opening if everything breaks his way. They say surveys have consistently shown her with a lead ranging from the mid-single digits to the low double digits. Facebook photos from 2014 also surfaced Hyde-Smith touring the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, with a caption that said, "Mississippi history at its best!"

Hyde-Smith apologized "to anyone that was offended" by the comment, which she intended as an "exaggerated expression of regard" for a local rancher who invited her to speak.

In one ad, a narrator says, "We can't afford a senator who embarrasses us and reinforces the stereotypes we've worked so hard to overcome".

MS - which still has the Confederate battle emblem on its state flag - has a history of racially motivated lynchings. Officials said roughly 800,000 votes were cast. Cindy Hyde-Smith about her comments referencing a "public hanging" and suggested her apology should suffice. Sometimes, race is something that people don't want to discuss because it's so uncomfortable.

Hyde-Smith was in her second term as Mississippi's elected agriculture commissioner when Republican Governor Phil Bryant chose her to temporarily succeed longtime Republican Senator Thad Cochran, who retired in April amid health concerns.

The runoff to serve the last two years of former Republican Senator Thad Cochran's term was necessary because neither Espy nor Hyde-Smith gained more than 50 percent of the vote in a November 6 special election with four candidates.

On Monday, President Donald Trump held two rallies in the state to support Hyde-Smith and encourage Republicans to get out and vote for her.

Trump said the MS senator "felt very badly" about her comments.

One sign referred to the Tuesday runoff between appointed Republican Sen.

Trump dubbed Espy a "far-left" member beholden to congressional Democratic leaders, all of whom are very unpopular in MS and other Deep South states that are the foundation of the president's conservative base.

Espy, 64, has campaigned as a moderate who would work with Trump and Republicans to benefit the state.

Hyde-Smith, whom President Trump supported, is projected to win in a runoff election against Democratic opponent Mike Espy on Tuesday. About 38 percent of the state's residents are black.

Nooses hanging from trees and hateful signs were found at the Mississippi State Capitol early Monday morning, just a day before a runoff election to decide whether a black man will hold a Senate seat in the state for the first time since 1883. She noted that the country's ex-president, Laurent Gbagbo, is being tried in the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Trump gave a shout-out to the "king of rock "n" roll" after taking the stage and said that, when he was young, "other than the blond hair, they said I looked like Elvis". "I resigned the contract". In his closing statement at the debate, Espy called Cochran a "thoughtful" and "efficient" senator, adding, "I would hope to be the kind of senator that Senator Cochran is".
