Ron DeSantis Defeats Andrew Gillum to Become Florida’s Governor

Republicans Score Major Upsets in Florida

The deeply purple state will learn Saturday whether recounts will be held in the bitter, tight U.S. Senate race between Republican Gov. Rick Scott and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson; and in the governor's race between former Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and the Democratic mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew Gillum.

According to the Miami Herald, if the margin of victory in a Florida race is 0.5 percent or less, a electronic recount of ballots must be carried out (unless the loser refuses).

Florida's governor's race on Thursday joined contests for U.S. Senate and state agricultural commissioner headed toward recounts as continued vote-counting in Democratic strongholds threatened apparent Republican winners. If that process shows a margin of less than 0.25 percentage points in any federal or state races, then Detzner would order a manual recount of what are known as under votes and over votes that would have to be completed by November 18.

Gillum's campaign is now hedging on their candidate's Tuesday night concession of the race to DeSantis.

The perpetually mismanaged elections office in Broward County, led by embattled Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes, is in the hot seat once again: Snipes, who was found to have violated federal law in 2016 by deleting ballots that were the subject of a lawsuit, now says she has no clue how many ballots might be left to count in Broward County.

And the recounts now have echoes of 2000: Gillum's campaign has hired Barry Richard to represent them during the recount.

Florida's secretary of state must still officially declare whether there will be a recount in any state race.

Nelson lawyer Marc Elias said Scott was using his official position to try to influence the election.

Standing on the steps of the Governor's Mansion Thursday night, Scott accused Snipes and Palm Beach election supervisor Susan Bucher, both Democrats, of trying to steal the election.

If the margins hold through 12 p.m. Saturday, elections supervisors will begin the statewide machine recount process. Governing is about getting things done on behalf of the people of Florida, keeping our economy going, improving our water quality and environment, promoting public safety and expanding educational opportunities. The Georgia race was marred by widespread allegations of voter suppression carried out by Brian Kemp, who is Georgia's secretary of state.

But Elias said showing identification increases the chances that the ballots will be counted.

Democrat Nikki Fried clings to a lead of.04 percent over Republican Matt Caldwell in the race for the Cabinet post of agriculture commissioner, or 2,915 votes.

Republican candidate for Florida governor Ron DeSantis speaks during an event put on by the Police Benevolent Association in Palm Beach County, on October 3, 2018.

"Even before the election, we knew that, mysteriously, they would find more ballots".

The South Florida Sun Sentinel said it analysed voting patterns and found that of Broward ballots already counted, 24,700 residents voted for a governor candidate but did not pick a candidate for Senate.

Political experts are hopeful that any recount won't be a repeat of the 2000 Presidential election.

Absentee ballots from overseas voters that were postmarked by Election Day and are still trickling in also will be added to the unofficial results, Turner said, along with write-in votes on ballots. "We believe that at the end of this process that Senator Nelson is going to be declared the victor". @AndrewGillum can still win & tens of thousands of votes are outstanding. Scott's team included Bill Scherer, a Fort Lauderdale attorney and veteran of the 2000 recount wars known for an aggressive style.

These ballots are the last to be counted and are verified by county canvassing boards.

"The results of the 2018 Senate election are unknown and I think that you and the elections officials should treat it as such", Elias told reporters on a conference call.
