Struggling Arsenal needed fresh start after Wenger - Emery

Arsenal news

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery has taken a quiet swipe at Arsene Wenger over the Frenchman's tactics during the club's decline months.

Arsenal failed to finish in the top four for the first time under Wenger in his final two campaigns, a situation former Paris Saint-Germain boss Emery believes was down to losing the "defensive structure". I respect him a lot, but no matter how much info he gave me, I had to change things.

"I forget also, Stephan Lichtsteiner is beginning to train with us but he is maybe not okay for Sunday".

Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny is likely to leave Arsenal in the January transfer window after failing to hold down a regular place at the Premier League club, English reports said. "We had to stop that and start climbing".

"But we are improving things, I think the performances at the moment are not bad in the last matches".

After Bouremouth, Arsenal will travel to Ukraine to face Vorskla on Thursday before the North London derby just three days later.

In terms of team news from both camps, the Gunners are lucky to have Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette back fit after the duo withdrew from their respective worldwide games.

"Both are very hard, but we want to ensure we perform the best we can on both fronts".

They remain three points adrift of the Premier League's top four but Emery appears to have injected energy into a team that was stagnating under Wenger.

He added: "I want to create a team that know how to exploit the space, are able to counter-attack, or when there's no space, calmly find a way to create openings".

Emery became coach in May after Wenger ended his 22-year reign, inheriting a team that finished sixth in the Premier League last season, and said his predecessor's focus on attacking football had led to defensive weaknesses. And within that, we want to see individual footballers growing and developing.

Unai Emery will be looking to put the winless run behind him and secure a win over Bournemouth to regain control in the race for top four.
