Trump Tweets Trade Talks With Xi 'Moving Along Nicely'

Donald Trump said his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping wants to make a deal to end an escalating trade war

But Trump described the call between the two leaders as "a long and very good conversation" and said "discussions are moving along nicely".

Mr Xi said he was "very happy" to talk to Mr Trump again and that he puts "great importance [on] good relations with the president", according to Chinese state media.

"President Xi Jinping also stressed that China-U.S. trade has always been serving as ballast and a stabilizer for China-U.S. relations".

Trump administration officials have said that trade talks with China can not resume until Beijing comes up with specific actions it is willing take to meet United States demands for sweeping changes to policies on technology transfers, industrial subsidies and market access.

The US president spoke to Xi on Thursday and later tweeted that trade talks with China were "moving along nicely" ahead of face-to-face talks between the pair at the G20 summit in Argentina later this month.

However, the Trump administration is still set to slap tariffs on all Chinese imports if these talks fail.

Washington, Europe and other trading partners say those violate China's market-opening obligations and some American officials worry they might erode US industrial leadership.

The US and China's tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods have rumbled on for months as Trump pledges to help create more US manufacturing jobs.

Xi also said he and Trump expressed hopes to expand bilateral trade cooperation, Xi was quoted as saying on CCTV state television.

"He wants to do it", Mr Trump said of Mr Xi.

"We have a new deal", he said adding that the U.S. is now negotiating with the European Union, which "has absolutely hurt" the United States. China has responded with retaliatory duties on $110 billion worth of United States goods.
