U.S. re-opens California border crossing with Mexico after briefly closing it

The dramatic shutdown of the crossing happened three days after Donald Trump threatened to close the entire US border with Mexico

Customs and Border Protection closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry - the busiest land border crossing in the western hemisphere and the primary artery connecting San Diego and Tijuana - for almost six hours after members of the caravan tried to enter the USA illegally, CBP officials said.

One migrant from Honduras said, "They started throwing tear gas at us".

Our chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay and his team have been on the front line of the migrants' struggle to make it across. The goal was to keep the immigrants out of the U.S.in order to prevent them from dispersing at the border while officials considered their requests.

Children screamed and coughed in the mayhem of the tear gas.

What had begun Sunday morning as a migrant protest of the slow pace of the USA asylum-claims process devolved into a chaotic scramble in which hundreds made their way to the border, hoping to cross onto US soil.

Mexican Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete accused some of the migrants of attempting the Tijuana crossing in a "violent way".

The Tijuana government said officers arrested 39 people.

"However, the border crossings that people stormed while trying to illegally enter the United States will be reinforced", the ministry said.

Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the US border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S. "Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the United States of America", the president said in a tweet. "Congress, fund the WALL!" It later tweeted that the pedestrian crossings had re-opened, a little more than four hours after the initial closure.

"As I have continually stated, D.H.S. will not tolerate this type of lawlessness and will not hesitate to shut down ports of entry for security and public safety reasons", Nielsen said.

Trump administration officials have characterized the vast majority of asylum claims as fraudulent or legally insufficient, and have taken steps to reduce the backlog of asylum claims that they say are often used by migrants to gain entry into the US and disappear into the country as their claims are adjudicated.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that USA authorities will continue to have a "robust" presence along the Southwest border and that they will prosecute anyone who damages federal property or violates US sovereignty.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday the country has sent 11,000 Central Americans back to their countries of origin since October 19, when the first caravan entered the country. If they agreed to the "Remain in Mexico" policy, those caravan members - and nearly certainly many thousands more who are on their way to the USA - would have to be cared for in Mexico while they await the outcome of their asylum requests.
