USA midterms 2018: Trump impeachment would be ‘DANGEROUS’ for Democrats

That will give Trump a partial claim of victory and allow him to continue his drive to reshape the federal courts.

Democrats needed to gain two Senate seats to win a majority, assuming all their incumbents were re-elected, an unlikely outcome.

Health care and immigration were high on voters' minds as they cast ballots in the midterm elections, per a wide-ranging survey by The Associated Press. The party defeated Republicans from the Northeast to the South and across the Midwest.

Another key House race is in California, where Democrat Harley Rouda is seeking to unseat longtime Republican incumbent Dana Rohrabacher in Republican bastion Orange County.

Should Republicans lose the House, Sanders says the president's agenda is not going to change.

Democratic victories included the defeat of 11-term Texas Representative Pete Session, the chairman of the Rules Committee, by former professional football player Colin Allred in a Dallas-area district. Dean Heller versus Democrat Jacky Rosen in Nevada; Democrat Kyrsten Sinema versus Republican Martha McSally in Arizona; Democratic Sen.

The president will then stand trial in the Senate, where a two-thirds vote is necessary for removal - a milestone that is unprecedented in American history. Democratic favorite Conor Lamb stunned Washington by winning a special election in the state and faced Republican Rep. Keith Rothfus in a new district that was among four that could flip from red to blue.

The O'Rourke-Cruz race is one of a handful of Senate contests being closely watched and O'Rourke, a former punk rocker, has mounted a surprisingly tough challenge against Cruz in traditionally Republican Texas. Republicans who rode their opposition to Obamacare to the House majority in 2010 were forced to backtrack in race after race, insisting that they actually did support such protections.

"Today is more than about Democrats and Republicans, it's about restoring the Constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", Nancy Pelosi, leader of the House Democrats, told supporters at victory party.

Outside Richmond, Virginia, one-time tea party favorite Rep. Dave Brat faced an unusually strong challenge from Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative motivated to run for office after the GOP vote to gut the Affordable Care Act.

As voters head to the polls Tuesday, nothing was certain.

Republicans are bracing for a likely loss of seats in the House of Representatives but are favoured to hold on to the Senate.

You're still up either because Senate returns are really slow, or you are obsessing over Alaska's toss-up gubernatorial race.

"There's a great electricity in the air, like we haven't seen, in my opinion, since the '16 election".

"This was a hard campaign", Curbelo told reporters in Miami. Right now, Republicans have 240 seats, and Democrats have 195. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.), Romney is poised to become the leading Republican counterweight to Trump in the Senate, if he chooses to take on that role. Bill Nelson was trailing his challenger, current Republican Gov. Rick Scott, with most of the vote in. A slow-moving caravan of thousands of Central American migrants trekking to the U.S. has served as ready fodder for Trump's diatribes for border security and immigration reform, and a roaring economy has helped the GOP foster confidence in their leadership.

Indeed, the election was in many ways a referendum on the president himself, two years after he beat most predictions and took the White House, even as he lost the popular vote.

Voters reported that their No. 1 issue in this election was health care - mentioned by just under half of those surveyed.

"The midterm elections used to be, like, boring", Trump said at a raucous rally Monday in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Democratic gains were fuelled by women, young and Hispanic voters, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. Fifty-five percent of women said they backed a Democrat for the House this year, compared to 49 percent in the 2014 midterm congressional election.

"We have long cautioned against assuming the House was a done deal for the Democrats, and we don't think readers should be stunned if things go haywire for Democrats tomorrow night", Crystal Ball editor-in-chief Larry Sabato and managing editor Kyle Kondik wrote.

The midterm elections are also often a time when local politicians make a name for themselves on a national level.

They could make life hard for Trump by launching another congressional investigation into allegations of Russian interference on his behalf in the 2016 election. He was active on Twitter throughout much of the day, blasting out endorsements for Republican candidates and weighing in on the balloting.

Immigration, healthcare and the economy ranked as the top issues for voters, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.
