Cameroon stripped of hosting 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Cameroon stripped of 2019 African Cup of Nations in June

Cameroon was stripped of the right to host next year's African Cup of Nations soccer tournament yesterday, with its preparations way behind schedule and a violent separatist rebellion in parts of the country making it a security risk.

CAF confirmed the unanimous decision after a meeting of its executive committee in Accra.

The confederation's executive committee has now opted to re-open bidding for the tournament, which is due to kick off in June 2019. After significant debate and having received detailed updates from numerous inspection visits over almost 18 months, CAF has noted that a number of compliance conditions have not been met.

The final game of the 2018 AWCON would take place on Saturday, as the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Bayana Bayana fight to be crowned the female champions of Africa.

Inspectors from Caf recently travelled to Cameroon, which last hosted the tournament in 1972, to check security, infrastructure, stadiums and accommodation.

For journalist Pierre Youte "it's perhaps a good decision. like this Cameroon will have the time to learn and find the means to host a CAN worthy of the name".

Morocco, which lost out to a joint United States-Canada-Mexico bid to host the 2026 World Cup, had already been touted as a replacement host and is seen as the favorite to step in.

South Africa also took over holding the 2013 tournament after original hosts Libya had pulled out two years earlier because of the armed conflict then raging in the country. It will also be the first Afcon expanded from 16 to 24 teams.
