In historic first, United Kingdom government found in contempt of parliament

UK told Brexit could be cancelled without approval of other members

The beleaguered leader made her sunny prediction while facing another Brexit-related headache - opposition lawmakers seeking to force May's government to publish legal advice it received about Britain's departure from the European Union.

The vote comes immediately after MPs voted to find Theresa May's government in contempt of parliament over its failure to publish its legal advice on the Brexit deal.

The move came after opposition parties led by Labour and the Democratic Unionist Party attacked ministers for publishing only a summary of the Brexit advice, despite a vote on November 13 demanding full publication.

Labour has hinted it would look to hold senior Tory ministers, which could include the attorney general, Geoffrey Cox, in contempt and seek their suspension from the Commons, the Guardian reports.

Twenty-five Conservative MPs rebelled to support Tory former minister Dominic Grieve's amendment created to give Parliament a greater say on Brexit plans if the Government's EU Withdrawal Agreement is rejected next week, according to the division list.

May was due to open five days of debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday, arguing that members of Parliament must back the agreement to deliver on the voters' decision to leave the European Union and "create a new role for our country in the world".

Theresa May's Government was found in contempt of Parliament as it suffered three Commons defeats in quick succession.

"The British people want us to get on with a deal that honours the referendum and allows us to come together again as a country, whichever way we voted", she will tell lawmakers on Tuesday, according to excerpts of her speech.

"This is the deal that delivers for the British people."

Keir Starmer commented: "Today's finding of contempt is a badge of shame for this government".

In an opinion prepared for the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Strasbourg, the advocate general said the United Kingdom did not need the approval of the 27 remaining EU member states to halt the two-year countdown triggered invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

"What we break now may be very hard to fix later", Leadsom said.

Monday's angry session of Parliament did not bode well for the December 11 vote, which will come at the end of five days of bruising debate starting on Tuesday.

The government said it will do so.

These concerns are not likely to derail the Brexit debates; however, the deal will probably not pass on its first reading based on Parliamentary arithmetic and May's minority conservative government.

She said it would not be in the "national interest" to block the Withdrawal Agreement, adding: "The only certainty would be uncertainty".

But it does highlight how little control May's fragile minority government has over MPs ahead of next Tuesday crucial vote.

In the most extreme no-deal scenario, shopping bills could rise by up to 10% but even in an orderly no-deal withdrawal, with a transition period, grocery prices could rise by 6%, he said. Lawmakers are due to hold five days of discussion before voting December 11 on whether to accept or reject the agreement, which lays out the terms of Britain's departure from the bloc on March 29 and sets the framework for future relations with the EU.
