Quake rocks Anchorage, but no tsunami warning for B.C.

Students dove under their desks and workers ran from buildings as a monster 7.0 natural disaster violently rocked Anchorage Friday morning.

According to CNN's Brian Stelter, the quake knocked all local Anchorage TV stations off the airwaves Friday morning. A 5.7 aftershock followed within minutes.

A tsunami warning that was issued for coastal zones in southern Alaska was cancelled and no tsunami was observed after back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.0 and 5.7 magnitudes near Anchorage.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted that US President Donald Trump had been briefed on the quake and was "monitoring damage reports".

"This is the second largest natural disaster we've had since 1964, which was a very significant natural disaster", Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz told reporters on Saturday, referring a historic magnitude-9.2 quake that was the most powerful recorded temblor in United States history.

"We are on the road to returning to normal", Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz said at a news conference on Saturday.

"Many houses and buildings are damaged, many roads and bridges are cut off, do not take the road if you can avoid it", the Anchorage police had recommended to the population, who has since announced the reopening of some main roads.

At present, three overnight emergency shelters in Anchorage, Chugiak and Wasilla have been opened by the Red Cross of Alaska. Johnson describes herself as a still and drone photographer, and posted this video to her Instagram account, which contains dozens of images of Alaska scenes and landscapes.

In a letter to parents and staff, Anchorage School District Superintendent Deena Bishop said that "many, if not all", schools sustained damage in the quake, and that it was securing its buildings to protect valuables that students and teachers left behind as they fled.

‎ About two and a half hours after the quake, the utility said approximately 7,000-10,000 customers ‎were still without power.‎. The railroad will use heavy equipment to fix the damage before it can resume train traffic between Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska's two largest cities.

"With a slip rate of more than 2 inches per year, this fault may be one of the fastest-moving strike-slip faults in the world", Baldwin said.

Blair Braverman was staying in a hotel with her husband when the quake hit.

Alaska has been hit by a number of powerful quakes over 7.0 magnitude in recent decades, including a 7.9 that hit last January southeast of Kodiak Island.
