Trump Sees a Meeting With North Korea's Kim as Soon as January

A South Korean train rolled across the heavily militarized frontier into North Korea for the first time in a decade Friday, as Seoul pushed ahead with a plan to reunite the two railway networks despite heavy United Nations sanctions.

When the leaders of North and South Korea had their historic meeting in April, North Korea's Kim Jong-un asked for help with updating his country's railways, which he said were in an "embarrassing" state.

The President was speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One as he returned home from the G20 summit in Argentina, but he apparently didn't offer any more details.

Meanwhile, the White House said that Trump had agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday to strive to "see a nuclear-free Korean peninsula".

According to CNN, President Moon Jae-in has "long dreamed" of building a trans-Korean railroad because of the economic benefits that would result in being more easily connected to China and Russian Federation.

Those events, combined with a recent North Korean threat to renew overt nuclear development should Washington continue opposing sanctions relief, suggested to many analysts that the countries are having problems seeing eye-to-eye, calling into question when a second summit might take place.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether Kim will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping.

Already with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump spoke about the need to work together with the global community to "keep up the pressure until North Korea implements its commitment to denuclearization".

North and South Korea have begun to remove landmines and destroy military bunkers at parts of their common border as part of efforts to improve long-strained relations.

He said also that he has a "good relationship" with Kim Jong-un and that they're "getting along very well".

Moon's top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by the South's Yonhap news agency saying that Trump "asked that South Korea and the USA closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula".

"As he promised, President Moon should invite Kim to Seoul and convince him" of making headway in the stalled denuclearization talks, former Unification Minster Jeong Se-hyun said during a meeting with liberal politicians on Saturday.
