Wilder, Fury draw in epic heavyweight showdown

Wilder retains WBC heavyweight belt after battling to draw against Fury

British judge Phil Edwards, meanwhile, couldn't separate the pair and saw the fight as a 113-113 draw, much to the frustration of both fighters and disgust of the fans inside the Staples Centre.

The triumvirate of Anthony Joshua, Wilder and Fury promise some great bouts at heavyweight in the years ahead.

They opened the fight looking to feel each other out and burned off nervous energy.

Fury, who returned from boxing this year after a more than two-year absence as his life spiralled out of control with depression, a suicide attempt and problems with alcohol and drugs, said he had got to his feet in the 12th to inspire others.

Tyson Fury appeared to be out cold on the canvas after eating a right hand and a crushing left hook from WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder in the 12th round. But the fight goes to the scorecard, and it ends in a shocking split draw.

"I think with the two knockdowns I definitely won the fight". I thought I won the fight.

"When I rush my punches like that I'm never accurate". Showed good heart to get back up.

Wilder had Fury on the canvas twice, including a spectacular final round knockdown, but was unable to get the knockout victory he had promised to deliver at the Staples Center.

"As long as I'm focused for the full duration of the fight, I don't see him landing any punches at all", Fury said.

Heavyweight legend Lennox Lewis made the comparison to his first fight with Evander Holyfield back in March 1999, which also ended in the same result, though the former won their rematch 10 months later.

Although Tyson Fury failed to take the heavyweight WBC crown away from the undefeated American champ Deontay Wilder, he won praise among the multi-million boxing fandom for his "rise from the death" in last round.

In front of a 17,698-strong attendance, both fighters entertained from the opening bell when they both threw threatening punches and Wilder landed a hurtful right as they briefly fought toe-to-toe.

"One hundred percent we'll do the rematch".

The victor was projected to face Joshua, the WBA, IBF and WBO title-holder, for the undisputed championship.

"We can only do our best in that ring, no matter what anyone says, Deontay is a great champion", Fury said. I don't know anyone on the planet that can move like that. After two tune-up fights, he agreed to challenge Wilder in America for the only belt Fury didn't win off Klitschko, the WBC belt.

But in the widely expected rematch with Fury, the 33-year-old "Bronze Bomber" will likely need to win to get his shot.
