After Comey firing, Federal Bureau of Investigation probed whether president was Russian agent

The revelation, which the White House called "absurd" in a late-evening statement, suggests that the Federal Bureau of Investigation felt Trump's firing of director James B. Comey in May 2017 was motivated by Russian interests and might constitute a threat to USA national security, the Times reported.

The probe later expanded into whether Trump committed a felony crime of obstruction of justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

US President Donald Trump' legal team should be able to "correct" Special Counsel Robert Mueller's final report in the investigation of allegations of Trump-Russia collusion and Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, Trump's lawyers Rudolph Giuliani said on Friday.

They were also motivated by his reported statements during a May White House meeting with visiting Russian officials that he had fired Comey because "he was insane, a real nut job".

The criminal probe had focused on interactions between Russian officials and Trump associates, and was originally in the summer of 2016, during the presidential election campaign. The Times says it's unclear whether Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

The Times reported that USA counterintelligence investigators were concerned that the president's actions were a possible threat to national security.

During the campaign, FBI officials were troubled by Trump's ties to Russia, and opened an investigation into the campaign in August 2016, two months after the Trump Tower meeting between campaign senior officials and Russian surrogates.

"The fact that it goes back a year and a half and nothing came of it that showed a breach of national security means they found nothing", Giuliani told the paper. Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.

"I have no concerns about Cohen at all because I can prove with very little effort that he is a total, complete and absolute liar", Giuliani said. There are reports that the special counsel's probe could wrap up as soon as next month. "Unlike President Obama who let Russian Federation and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russian Federation".

Trump and his allies have repeatedly criticized Mueller's investigation, calling it a "witch hunt" and questioning the political motivations of his investigators. However, it is not known if he is still looking into the investigation against Trump.
