Andy Murray Tearfully Announces His Retirement From Tennis

Paul Annacone shares why Rafael Nadal gets injured more than Roger Federer

Andy Murray has shocked the tennis world by announcing that the upcoming Australian Open may be his final tournament.

Murray, 31, has chosen Wimbledon as the swansong for his remarkable career, but he said that the pain was so bad now that he was unsure whether he could compete in July.

Andy plans on playing in the Australian Open, which begins on Sunday, and he also hopes to play in Wimbledon, though he's not sure he'll make it to that.

"I spoke to my team and I told that I can't keep doing this, that I needed to have an end point because (I was) just playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop", he told the news conference Friday.

"I'm in a better place than I was 12 months ago but I'm still in a lot of pain." .

"I don't want to continue playing that way".

Murray confirmed that he met with the same surgeon in Melbourne on Thursday who conducted last year's surgery.

Murray will play 22nd seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round on Monday. He's a three-time Grand Slam victor (twice at Wimbledon, once at the US Open), a two-time Olympic champion, a Davis Cup champion, victor of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals and a former world No. 1. At 31, top-ranked Djokovic is at Melbourne Park also trying to win a seventh Australian title. "I've tried pretty much everything that I could to get it right and that hasn't worked".

He walks away with two Wimbledon wins, a US Open title and two Olympic medals.

Murray added that quality of life was now his priority going forward with his hip and that a further operation remained an option, though not to prolong his career.

Murray revealed he's considering another hip operation, more to improve his quality of life than as a way of returning to the top level in tennis. "I can play with limitations, that's not an issue, it's having the limitations and also the pain is not allowing me to enjoy competing, training or any of the stuff I love about tennis". "That's something that I'm seriously considering right now". "Would be a pretty cool moment to play doubles (with) his bro at Wimby if he can't play singles", added the American, referring to Murray's older brother, doubles specialist Jamie. "I've obviously been struggling for a long time", Murray said. "Obviously you see me running around a tennis court, walking in between points, and obviously I know it doesn't' look good. look comfortable". "There are little things, day to day, that are also a struggle". "I told them I think I can get through this until Wimbledon. That's the main reason for doing it".
