Brisbane International: Tsonga's comeback gathers pace with win over de Minaur

Alex De Minaur in action. More

World number nine Kei Nishikori defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russian Federation in the summit clash to clinch the 2019 Brisbane International title here at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Japanese star was in superb form as he put on a commanding all-court display against his French opponent to advance to the final for the second time in three years 6-2 6-2.

"If I'm being really frank, I just feel like I had the worst attitude today".

He showed all the qualities of a top five player in his 66-minute demolition at the Pat Rafter Arena.

Any thought Medvedev would take the momentum into the decider proved wrong as Nishikori stormed to a 5-1 lead, eventually wrapping up the final in just over two hours. "I've never had a match like this, but I'm happy I'm back in the semis", Pliskova, who fired 14 aces and 27 winners, said. "I served well, I returned well - I think that was the key today - and I was moving well, that was fantastic".

"But (Stubbs) said, "I am absolutely sure you can win this match", which gave me some confidence and belief that I can do it and that's what I did".

Medvedev, the world number 16, said the tactic when playing a big server like Raonic was to pay attention to his own serve first.

"I think we had the great fight until 5-4, and then suddenly, I don't know, maybe she raised her level so much that I was not ready for that".

Earlier, former world number one Karolina Pliskova battled back from a set and a break down to beat Lesia Tsurenko 4-6 7-5 6-2 and win the women's title for the second time.

"Physically and tennis-wise I think it was ideal".

"I was sulking a little bit, and like there are moments that I tried not to do that".

"Everything was going well for me. Hopefully this isn't like a recurring thing".

"I had so many chances and I thought I could win in two sets".
