WOW: White Sox Reportedly Won't Top SEVEN Years for Harper or Machado

Manny Machado

Phillies officials have planned a face-to-face meeting with Bryce Harper in his hometown of Las Vegas over "the next week or so", a person close to the player told Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia. He also stated that rival teams believe Philadelphia will make each player the highest contract offer. Nightengale's details followed Wednesday's contradictory reports from ESPN's Jeff Passan and The Score's Bruce Levine, the former saying the White Sox were willing to guarantee a 10-year deal to Harper and the latter saying the White Sox wouldn't go past seven years with either Harper or Machado.

The New York Yankees are still one of the three teams in on Manny Machado. That aligns perfectly with the Dodgers refusal to go ten years which the Nationals offered Harper at the beginning of free agency.

However, if the Phillies, Chicago White Sox, or some other team were to offer, say, a full 10-year deal at or above $400 million total value, such security would likely prove hard to turn down.

Also worth noting, just a few minutes after this news was released, the Philadelphia Phillies signed free agent reliever David Robertson to a two-year deal. Machado has made four All-Star teams and won two Gold Glove awards in his seven-year Major League Baseball career.

When it comes to the Yankees, they are the team Machado wants, but with them not willing to break the bank, the White Sox and Phillies could have a chance if they bid significantly higher than the NY franchise.

That could then leave the door open for the Nationals to make a similar offer to the one they reportedly made in September.

The twists and turns keep coming in the public on-again off-again courtship between the Washington Nationals and free agent outfielder Bryce Harper.

Don't expect a decision anytime soon, at least not both of them.
