Barry Jenkins Before ‘Moonlight’: ‘My Josephine’

MY JOSEPHINE (Dir. Barry Jenkins, 2003, 8min) from Barry Jenkins on Vimeo.

The most touching, beautiful and hopeful film of the year, Moonlight, is the second feature of director Barry Jenkins, an extraordinary rising talent. My Josephine is his first film, a short made after the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. The film follows an Arab couple who wash U.S. flags for free during their laundromat night shift. As expected from Jenkins, it is tender, alive, and poetic, with blurred images and point of view shots that render the slow ebb and flow of sensations and emotional discoveries.
